What are some of the primary duties?
• Review file, draft, prepare and process court pleadings, legal documents, correspondence and forms as necessary.
• Determine witness/subpoena list
• Prepare and send discovery material.
• Coordinate the schedule of court hearings with law enforcement, social workers, witnesses, judges and district attorneys.
• Review police reports and complete and draft criminal complaint from law enforcement reports and Department of Transportation documents and make appropriate determination regarding criminal or civil action.
Make penalty section determination.
Discern whether criminal or civil case by reviewing driving records.
Obtain certified copies of driving records.
• Review and compile required data from law enforcement reports, District Attorney's files and criminal complaints.
Provide mandatory reports to state.
Analyze all information, apply it to the specific statute, and include all elements of the crime using this as the basis for the criminal or forfeiture complaint.
• Review information on Crime Information Bureau/National Crime Information Center (CIB/NCIC) Fingerprint/Final Disposition Report determining accurate charge and NCIC code and provide it to Clerk of Courts.
• Coordinate with social workers, parents and school officials regarding juvenile referrals and court proceedings.
Drafting petitions from police and social workers reports.
• Receive and review juvenile referrals for determination of appropriate allegations under Juvenile in need of Protective Services (JIPS), delinquency, truancy and other actions.
• Responsible for determining whether referral goes to truancy court or referred to human services.
Draft complaint and coordinate with court.
• Review police reports and merchant reports and make appropriate decision as to criminal or civil action and draft criminal complaint in worthless check cases.
• Determine whether worthless check case requires criminal conviction or dismissal, determine restitution and costs.
Draft waiver and pleas regarding worthless check cases including appropriate motions and orders for bond.
• Compile and maintain accurate statistical data for reports regarding worthless check cases.
• Maintain warrant list from Time systems from status.
• Use computer to receive and analyze Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (CCAP), Department of Transportation (DOT) and other records.
• Input all required data in PROTECT computer system and maintain knowledge of this system through continuing training provided.
• Assist Legal Associate Supervisor, District Attorney, Victim Witness Coordinator, and Diversion Program Coordinator as needed.
What are the minimum requirements?
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate degree in paralegal, business or related field preferred.
• Legal secretarial training or a minimum of one year work experience as a legal secretary required.
• A minimum of one year of computer experience required.
Must be proficient in Microsoft programs such as Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.
• Ability to type accurately.
A minimum of 60 words per minute strongly preferred.
• Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
